Why I'll Always Make New Year's Resolutions

As the year draws to a close and the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve, many of us embark on the tradition of making resolutions. Some call them resolutions; I prefer to call them goals. And yes, that includes the infamous "going to the gym more" goal. I know, the gym regulars might roll their eyes, but hear me out. I'll always make these goals because they genuinely help me.

OK! for me, setting goals as the calendar flips over is not about succumbing to peer pressure or following a trend. It's not even about adhering to societal expectations of self-improvement. It's about something much deeper - the excitement of possibilities and the desire to simply "do better."

There's something inherently refreshing about the start of a new year. It's like a blank page in the book of life, waiting to be filled with adventures, achievements, and personal growth. It's a chance to reflect on the past and envision the future.

Goals, or resolutions if you prefer, give me a sense of direction. They help me chart a course for the year ahead. They serve as reminders of what truly matters to me. Whether it's a commitment to health, a career aspiration, a promise to nurture relationships, or a vow to explore new horizons, these goals keep me focused. They also allow for flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes our plans need to adapt. That's perfectly fine. The act of setting these goals doesn't bind me to rigid expectations but rather encourages me to stay resilient and adjust my sails when needed.

Moreover, making these goals public, or at least sharing them with a trusted friend or two, adds an element of accountability. It's a way of saying, "Hey, I'm working on this, and I'd appreciate your support." Sharing my goals with trusted friends adds an element of accountability and support. It's incredible how a little encouragement from loved ones can fuel our determination.

The journey of growth and self-improvement is often more important than the final destination, and these goals serve as guides along the way. I'll always be a firm believer in setting New Year's goals, or as I prefer to call them, "goals for the year ahead." It's not about conforming to trends or societal pressures; it's about embracing the fresh start that a new year offers. The excitement of possibilities and the desire to do better propel me to create these goals. These goals provide a sense of direction, helping me chart a course for the upcoming year. They serve as reminders of my priorities, whether they involve health, career, relationships, or personal growth. While these goals offer focus, they also allow for flexibility because life is ever-changing.

So, as we approach another New Year's Eve, I'll sit down with my list of goals (which I’ve compiled in my google doc), both big and small. Some I'll achieve, some may take time requiring more time and effort, and a few may evolve into something entirely unexpected. But that's the beauty of it all - the journey of growth and self-improvement and the opportunity to embrace personal growth and the excitement of what the future holds. And yes, the gym goal will probably be there, too. Because, you know what? Gym rats, we're not here to annoy you; we're just here to be a little better than we were yesterday. And for that, I'll always make my New Year's goals. I do this because the journey to self-improvement is one I'll always be excited to embark upon.
