July Musings: The Art of Being a Thoughtful Guest

Because celebrating beautifully is not only about how we host. It is also about how we show up.

Summer always puts me in the mood to celebrate.

Longer days. Dinner outside. A beautiful table set just because. Friends lingering a little longer over cocktails. Impromptu invitations that somehow turn into the best evenings.

We are fully in summer hosting and entertaining mode, and I love every bit of it.

And with summer invitations filling our calendars, there is one question that always comes up: What should you bring when someone invites you into their home?

My answer is simple.

Never arrive empty-handed.

I spend a lot of time talking about the art of celebrating and how we can create more meaningful, beautiful experiences for the people we love. But there is another side of hospitality that deserves just as much attention.

The art of being a good guest.

Because as much as I believe in hosting beautifully, I also believe in showing up thoughtfully.

A hostess gift does not have to be expensive or extravagant. The best hostess gifts simply feel considered. They say, I was thinking of you before I walked through the door.

So, as we move through a season filled with dinner parties, rooftop gatherings, weekends away and spontaneous summer celebrations, I have carefully curated my Hostess Gift Edit with thoughtful gift ideas for the people who love to host and entertain.

1. A Beautiful Book

A beautiful coffee table, hosting or design book is one of my favorite hostess gifts.

Choose something that feels like it belongs in their home. Perhaps a book about a city they love, a designer whose work reflects their style, travel, food, flowers or entertaining.

The best part?

It becomes part of their home long after the evening is over.

And yes, I may be slightly biased, but I happen to know a beautiful book about celebrating that makes a wonderful gift.

2. Flowers, Already in a Vase

Flowers are always lovely.

But flowers already arranged in a beautiful vase? Thoughtful.

Your host gets to enjoy them without stopping what they are doing to search for a vessel, trim stems and arrange flowers while guests are arriving.

Bring the blooms and the vase.

It is a small distinction, but these are exactly the kinds of details that make a gesture feel considered.

3. A Candle, Matches and Beautiful Home Fragrance

A beautiful scented candle paired with a striking matchbox is such an easy hostess gift.

Simple. Useful. And made for creating ambiance at home.

But I also love expanding this idea beyond candles.

A beautiful room spray, luxury home fragrance or diffuser can be equally lovely, especially when you have a sense of your host's taste.

Scent is deeply connected to memory and atmosphere. A beautiful fragrance can completely change the feeling of a room, which makes home scent such a thoughtful gift for someone who loves creating ambiance.

4. A Bottle, Dressed Up

Wine or champagne can absolutely be a thoughtful hostess gift.

The secret is in the presentation.

Add a beautiful ribbon. A handwritten tag. A small note.

Suddenly, the bottle you brought does not feel like something you grabbed on the way over.

It feels considered.

And if you want to take the idea one step further, pair it with a beautiful wine chiller or bottle chiller.

Useful, beautiful and perfect for someone who loves to entertain.

5. A Serving Set Bundle

I love the idea of creating your own hostess gift set.

Start with a beautiful serving board.

Add salad servers or serving utensils.

Layer in beautiful cloth napkins.

Then tie everything together with ribbon.

It instantly feels curated.

You are not simply giving them an object. You are paying attention to how they live, host and gather.

More Thoughtful Hostess Gift Ideas for People Who Love to Entertain

When choosing a gift for someone who loves to host, I often think about the small details they may not buy for themselves but will absolutely enjoy using.

A beautiful wine or bottle chiller is perfect for summer entertaining and dinner parties.

For the cocktail lover, consider a beautiful bar setor cocktail tools. Something elegant enough to leave on the bar or cocktail cart becomes part of their entertaining space.

I also love cocktail napkins, beautiful coasters , martini glasses and small bar accessories. These are the little details that make cocktail hour feel more considered and are easy to personalize based on your host's style.

Serving pieces, linen napkins and tabletop accessories are also wonderful gifts for people who genuinely enjoy bringing others together.

The key is to think about how your host entertains.

Are they always making cocktails?

Setting a beautiful table?

Opening a bottle of wine?

Creating the perfect scent and atmosphere at home?

Pay attention.

The best gifts often come from noticing how someone lives.

The Secret Is in the Wrapping

My little secret?

Presentation matters.

A ribbon, beautiful paper or handwritten note can make even the simplest hostess gift feel personal and thoughtfully chosen.

It does not need to be elaborate.

It simply needs to feel intentional.

Because the difference between bringing something and giving a gift is often in the way it is presented.

The Art of Showing Up Thoughtfully

Hospitality is a beautiful exchange.

Someone opens their home, prepares a meal, pours the drinks, sets the table and creates space for people to gather.

And as guests, we have the opportunity to meet that gesture with one of our own.

A beautiful book.

Flowers in a vase.

A candle and matches.

A thoughtfully dressed bottle.

A little bundle created especially for them.

The gift itself may be small.

But the message is much bigger.

I thought of you.

And perhaps that is the real art of celebrating.

Creating small, meaningful moments that remind people they matter.
